Cousin Kate.

Today's lesson, we read Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti. We discussed many points on this poem, firstly we establsihed that the ''fallen lady'' was an innocent virgin who simply fell in love. However, the man she fell in love with played her and took her virginity, therefore her innocence. This lead to her becoming one of these ''fallen women''. After this event, the male left the ''fallen lady'' and became attached to Cousin Kate.

He grew feelings for Kate and proposed with a ring to. As this happened, the ''whore'' became jealous as she was still in love with this man and Cousin Kate wasn't, she was just in love with his money. However, she suddenly realised that she had something that Cousin Kate could never have, something that defeats Cousin Kate. This was a son. By the woman having this child it means that the child will inherrit all the land the man owns. Also by having a child this purifies the ''whore'' and makes them accepted in society.

Second lesson on interpretations

My lateset lesson on Goblin Market was discovering what others interpretations were on this poem. Other groups did; erotic, femenism, moral and redemption. I think the best interpretation of goblin market would be erotic as I think there are many examples that can back up this point.
Firstly, Rossetti uses subtle descriptons in this peom such as ''unpecked cherrys'' I think this represents Lauras virginity. However, Laura does loose this innocence when she sells part of her hair (''golden curl'') this symbolises prostitiution as Laura is selling herself to the Goblin men.
Another example of erotica in this poem is when Lizzie buys the addictive fruit for Laura, to help her get better. However when she does so, the goblins take advantage of Lizzie and force her to become addicted. ''Held her hands and squeezed their fruits'', this to me seems like a sexual harrasment as she is beaten up in persuasion to become addicted, just like her sister Laura.

Marxism in Goblin Market

I think that Marxism in this poem is reflected as feminism and eroticism. My reason for this is because Rossetti shows how the Victorian values of feminine sexuality are explored throughout the poem, also I think that Victorian upper class men were represented by the goblins, and how they used and exploited the sisters.

The goblins are almost business men like as they are nice at first but however after they get what they want they aren't bothered anymore, as if they are con artists and have conned her into tasting the fruits and making lauren addicted to the fruits and after this has happened they ''vanished into the distance''. To me, this shows that they didn't care about Lizzie afterwards, by writing 'vanished' I think it shows that the goblins tried to get away as quickly as possible.

Rossetti

Rossetti began writing down and dating her poems from 1842, mostly imitating her favoured poets. From 1847 she began experimenting with verse forms such as sonnets, hymns and ballads, drawing narratives from the bible, folk takes and the lives of the saints. Her early pieces often feature meditations on death and loss, in the Romantic tradition. She published her first poem, which appeared in the ‘’Athenaeum’’, when she was 18. Under the pen-name "Ellen Alleyne", she contributed to the literary magazine,” The Germ’’, published by the Pre-Raphaelites from January - April 1850 and edited by her brother William. This marked the beginning of her public career.

Her most famous collection, Goblin Market and Other Poems, appeared in 1862, when she was 31. It received widespread critical praise, establishing her as the main female poet of the time. The title poem is one of Rossetti's best known works. Although it is ostensibly about two sisters' misadventures with goblins, critics have interpreted the piece in a variety of ways: seeing it as an allegory about temptation and salvation; a commentary on Victorian gender roles and female agency; and a work about erotic desire and social redemption. Rossetti was a volunteer worker from 1859 to 1870 at the St. Mary Magdalene "house of charity" in Highgate, a refuge for former prostitutes and it is suggested Goblin Market may have been inspired by the "fallen women" she came to know.

Lesson on destination

Today's lesson was on destination. We were asked what we thought the destination of Pride and Prejudice is, I think that its for Mrs Bennit to marry all of her daughters off in rich families. I came up with this idea because in the first chapter, Jane Austen doesn't introduce the characters to the reader she only introduces the conversation. By putting emphasis on the conversation it tells the reader that this is very important, and since the conversation is between Mr and Mrs Bennit and how she wants her husband to meet a new man in town to see if he's marriageable for their daughters,i think this does hint something to us readers.

Also in the first sentence of the novel, Austen starts with ''It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife''. This sentence is separate from the rest of the page in structure, this shows how important this idea truly is to the novel and also, I think, conceals information and gives us a little hint on what's to come up in the novel.

The significance of a crumbled piece of paper.

Its obvious to the reader that there is something important about the piece of paper being on the floor, as the writer wouldn't of decided to invole this in the passage.

I think the writer would invole the paper to make the passage more tence and mysterious this makes the reader engage in the passage and wonder what is so significant about this single piece of paper that is placed on the floor. I think that by including a simple piece of paper its withholding information from the reader which shows that there is something important about to happen later on in the story.
