The audiences impression of the chorus - Dr. Faustus.

I think that the audience is told to not have a set impression of Faustus after the chorus as, it firstly states 'To patient judgements'. This is therefore telling the audience to not ownly to not judge him, but also that he does have many negatives about him, for example selling his soal. However, two lines later the audience is meant to feel empathy for Faustus as it states 'Now is he born'. This gives the audience sudden empathy for the character because they see him grow up and develop as a character.
The chorus hints clear signs of Faustus being a typical gothic protagonist, as the chorus repeatedly highlights the fact that Faustus is intelligent. The last line finishes with 'in his study sits', this tells the reader that he is wealthy enough to have a study and also that he must be clever if he needs a study. Another factor which hints to the audience is his sense of pride 'Till swoln with cunning, of self-conceit', portrays Faustus proud side of himself.
To conclude, I think that this chorus gives mixed thoughts for the audience to gain an impression on, as they are told he has negatives about him but also told to not actually judge him yet. However, they are also given clear signs of Faustus being a typical gothic protagonist, therefore allows them to not actually have a set impression on the main character.

Why was there tension between Catholics and Protestants?

The Catholic church believes that it is the only true church on earth, and that all other Christian churches broke away from the Mother Church. They claim that if they are right then there is no need for the other churches.The Protestant churches came about because of the strict dogma of the Mother church and the demand of payment to have sins forgiven. The Protestants (Protesters) believed that only God could forgive sins through earnest repentance and by good works. One other fact is that the Mother church believed that only the clergy could read the Bible, so Bibles for the common people were banned.

Dr. Faustus

Before: I was interested to know what the play had to do with heaven and hell, however I didn't know anything about it.

During: While reading the script I found it hard to understand the language, as it was published in 1600. Also, I found it hard to see the gothic side to the play, this was probably because I couldn't really understand it.

After: I felt relieved to finish the play to be honest, however I am looking to studying this in class because it will be nice to understand what the play is about. Also, the character Wagner kept reminding me of the X Factor guy!

End of Act 1

Firstly Linda breaks down to Biff and Happy, and informs them that Willy has been attempting to kill himself through car crashes and a small length of rubber pipe attached to the heater. This shocks the audience and also brings a slight sence of sympathy for Willy as we beggin to understand that he obvioulsy doesnt enjoy his life anymore.

The audience also beggin to understand what has happened between Biff and Willy, asBiff says "I know he's a fake and he don't like anybody around who knows!".Willy then re-enters and Biff fights with him again over him being too harsh on Linda, as Willy is always ignoring Linda and treating her wrong, Biff obviously sees this and thus acts in a abusive way (fighting with Willy). Biff and Happy talk excitedly about starting a sporting business, and Biff is planning on going to see Bill Oliver to try and get some money together. This to me seems like the most clever thing to do to gain money, rather than fantase about a 'sporting business'. Willy then joins them at the thought of his sons doing well in business, he describes their idea as "Million dollar". Linda however has her doubts, saying "I'm just wondering if Oliver will remember him". This to me seems like she is trying o protect Willy from getting hurt as she knows how Bill Oliver will treat him.

Are Willy's self destructive actions caused by an attempt to act ethically?

Willy cases many self destructive actions, these are:-- Willy cheating on Linda, this makes Willy feel guilty everytime he sees Linda mending her stockings, due to the whole situation.
- Willy denies about his own selfs ability, by the sounds of it Willy should have an outdoor job for example gardening. However, Willy does not acknowledge this and constantly pts himself down as he cannot succeed in his real job.
- Willy constantly compares himself to others - especially to his elder brother Ben.
- Willy is also very hypocritical, as he wishes he had taken Ben's job offer 'What a mistake. He begged me to go.'However soon after that he doesnt take on Charely's job offer, 'What the hell are you offering me a job for?', this happens many times during the play.

Notes on Aristotle

Mimesis - Aristotle indicates that the medium of tragedy is drama, not narrative; tragedy “shows” rather than “tells.” According to Aristotle, tragedy is higher and more philosophical than history because history simply relates what has happened while tragedy dramatizes what may happen.
The incentive moment - The plot must be “a whole,” with a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning, called by modern critics the ''incentive moment'' which must start the cause-and-effect chain but not be dependent on anything outside the compass of the play.
The denouement - Aristotle calls the cause-and-effect chain leading from the incentive moment to the climax the “tying up”, in modern terminology the complication. He therefore terms the more rapid cause-and-effect chain from the climax to the resolution the “unravelling”, in modern terminology the dénouement.
The deus ex machina - The plot must be “complete,” having “unity of action.” By this Aristotle means that the plot must be structurally self-contained, with the incidents bound together by internal necessity, each action leading inevitably to the next with no outside intervention, no deus ex machina
Catastrophe - The plot may be either simple or complex, although complex is better. Simple plots have only a “change of fortune” (catastrophe).
